Usui Method of Reiki
Legend and history are full of references and stories about Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing in 1922. Likewise, two of his most infamous students, Chujiro Hayashi and Madame Hawayo Takata, are well known for their individual stories as their resultant efforts, developments and teachings which were spread from Japan to the United States and worldwide. Since so many have written on this topic, there is much to be gained in doing a little research if you have a driving interest in this area. Reiki is a technique that is today used for stress reduction and relaxation. Originally birthed as a method for engaging spiritual energy, it evolved into an energetic healing form over time as the original masters perfected their understanding of the subtle energies. It is administered by what some call a “laying on of hands” yet one does not have to touch a person for the energy to work. It is based on the idea that a (God-given) unseen life force energy flows through all of us and is what causes us to be alive.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It is a Love-based work. The energy is a way to help oneself harmonize all aspects of self. Reiki energy recognizes the whole person — body, emotions, mind (thinking) and spirit — creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation, feelings of peace, security and well-being.
Reiki energy has no known side effects. It has been known to effectively help in virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. Reiki has begun being used in mainstream medicine (hospitals in particular). It works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. Many non-traditional, holistic and alternative practitioners incorporate Reiki healing within their practices as well.
What Reiki is Not
- Its use is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and, therefore, is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.
- It is not a religion. While Reiki is spiritual in nature: it has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all, and will work whether you believe in it or not.
- It is not psychic healing, mind control or hypnosis. It is not wishful thinking.
- Reiki does not drain a practitioner’s energy. Some may gain restfulness from it; others are energized. Your intention to ‘Reiki On’ or ‘Reiki Off’ controls the flow.
There are three basic levels of Reiki –
I: for self-use and on others in close proximity; history of Usui Reiki is discussed along with hand-placements for energy flow
II: for use with others, and in long-distance situations; Reiki symbols are introduced (both traditional and contemporary models)
III(a): training as a Master, passing on attunements to students as well as more practical aspects of doing the work*
III(b): training as a Reiki Teacher, learning what to teach and how to make that a major part of your business*
*Often Levels III (a) and (b) are taught in one workshop.
Grand Master Levels 4-18 go beyond Usui’s teaching, and further deepen a master’s spiritual growth. Over 25 different types of Reiki exist today, as channeled by various people worldwide, most of which are off shoots from the original reiki imparted by Dr.Usui.
A few personal notes:
I have chosen to use Usui Reiki on myself and as a spiritual practice. It is also a healing modality incorporated in my client practice. Reiki is known to work on a deep level and for the things your body-mind-spirit needs. It is helpful to know that in Reiki we live in the moment and trust the energy to offer that which is most needed. Our job is to be a center of Love and Light allowing it to flow.
Someone may seek Reiki energy for a specific issue (as an example, let’s say a sprained ankle), yet the energy release may or may not respond in the exact way or timing you anticipate. Perhaps there are underlying muscular issues that resulted in the (obvious) sprain…practitioners worldwide understand and teach students that the energy will naturally go where it is MOST needed.
Both the practitioner and the client over time come to appreciate that the universal life force energy deals with our unconscious needs as well as what we consciously understand. Energy is not forced, and yet it is a means to invoke equilibrium (balance) and align the energy centers (chakras and nadis) as well as meridians to create a state of “ease” or health rather that a dis-ease of flow. This typically results over time in relief and improvement or elimination of various life ailments.
In my practice, Reiki can be utilized as a stand-alone stress release technique as well as an adjunct therapy along with other relaxation and stress relief methods. Each person is treated individually depending on that which is being manifested in the moment. Other types of Reiki in which I’ve been attuned to assist you: Karmic, Seichem, Gaia-Now, Eye Care, Tanaka San, and Yungang Grottos Buddhas.
